If we go shop and purchase from the shop, we realize many things covering or packaging. It is important that our products be kept safe and clean. But often this wrapping is plastic. Plastic is a material that is ubiquitous, yet bad for the Earth. Oftentimes, the biggest issue with plastic is how long it takes to decompose. Some plastics don’t even break down and can remain in the environment for hundreds or thousands of years! A lot of damage can be done in such a long time and so to our planet.
But don’t worry! There are lots of things we can do to cut down on the amount of plastic wrapping we use – and do our bit for the earth while we’re at it. One such company that is pushing to change the game is Richer. They produce many of the products we love, and they have some really exciting environmentally friendly wrapping ideas that could help us all!
What a fantastic idea to use paper not plastic. Well, paper comes from trees, and trees are a renewable resource! That means we can plant new trees, and we can keep using them over and over again. The process of making paper is more sustainable because trees can be replaced and they take less time to be processed. And paper decomposes much more quickly than plastic. It means if we throw away paper, it won't be there for as long and it won't harm the Earth as much.
Richer has a notion to replace plastic with glass. Glass: Glass is infinitely recyclable without compromising quality or purity. This is really important because we can recycle glass and use it repeatedly. Glass, furthermore, leaches no toxic chemicals into the environment like plastic can do. That makes glass a way safer option for our health and the planet.
You can also use cloth wrap instead of plastic or paper to wrap. Use different types of cloths: There are reusable beeswax wraps, cloth napkins, etc. These cloths are perfect because they are washable and can be used many, many times. We give less waste here, which is also helpful for our mother earth by employing cloth wraps.
A second solution is to use plant-based plastic. This plastic is created from renewable resources, such as corn or sugarcane. Plant-based plastic is a preferred option because it decomposes significantly quicker than normal plastic when discarded. It is also not a depletable resource, such as oil, used to make regular plastic.
A good way to do this is to use packaging that is made to be composted. Composting is the process of combining food scraps and other organic materials, such as cardboard and yard waste, to create nutrient-dense soil. You take the packaging, don’t throw it away or put it in a landfill, you put it in a compost bin, and it will break down and be good soil for plants.”
